DATA students design custom dog houses for Barkitecture contest

Put your paws together for a good cause!

Design and Technology Academy (DATA) students in the Architecture Club at Roosevelt High School are ready to show off two custom doghouses representing the light side and the dark side of the force.

On Saturday, May 4, their dog houses will be judged during the 2024 Barkitecture contest at Woodlawn lake from 10 a.m. –  4 p.m. The theme is ‘Paw Wars’ – which is fitting on ‘May the Fourth.’

Katy Philbrick’s architecture courses cover developing, engineering, and designing building structures and facilities. She challenged her students to build each dog house with a single piece of plywood and no screws, nails or glue. They did all of this while sticking to the Star Wars theme.

Laura Le, a junior in the DATA program, has participated in the Barkitecture contest for the past three years. She says building a structure without screws, nails or glue takes a lot of precision.

“The challenge here was that we all had to work together to make it one puzzle piece. With no screws, nails or glue -- everything had to be very precise. One group painted, one group built it and the other designed it.”

Barkitecture San Antonio is a city-wide high school competition to build the "BEST" dog house in town. After the contest Saturday, each dog house will be auctioned off during a silent auction. All the proceeds go to local pet rescues and non-profits.

Good luck to the DATA Architecture Club!
