• 2022/2023 Impact Report

Librarian

  • Pre-K Academy students were invited to create a pumpkin for our Literary Pumpkin Patch. They brought in pumpkins decorated at home to represent various book characters.
  • The library hosted the annual Fall Book Fair in October. Families came to purchase books, and Volunteers helped students create their wish lists. It was a fun way to promote reading and for parents to learn about age-appropriate books for their children.
  • Read Across America 2022-2023 was a success at Pre-K Academy! Students dressed up daily to promote awareness of reading, and they loved reading to their stuffed animals.
  • In March, we welcomed Miss Anastasia to the library. The always-engaging storyteller entertained our students with fun spring read-alouds.

Teacher

  • I collaborated with teachers to create a lesson on the essential parts of the school community. Students drew themselves around various parts of the school, such as the library, cafeteria, gym, or classroom.
  • The librarian introduced Pre-K students to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how he wanted peace for all. Students created a mobile using a cut out of a paper hand, a peace dove, and a small picture of Dr. King.
  • Numerous mini-lessons were taught to the Pre-K students to reinforce the state-mandated Pre-K guidelines. Those lessons included social-emotional learning, such as teaching breathing exercises, engaging in pre-reading activities by asking questions about stories, caring for books, book selection, and many more.
  • The librarian collaborated with the STEM teacher on Bears on Chairs, a lesson. The students were asked to devise a plan to sit five bears on four chairs. Students were given miniature chairs, Keva planks, popsicle sticks, and drawing paper to brainstorm how to accommodate the fifth bear. It was amazing to see them create and explain their plan.

Lesson Spotlight

Students listened to a story about Mexican art to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. One particular art skill that the book mentioned was repujado art, the art of metal embossing. Students were shown examples of repujado art and then allowed to design something. They covered plates with foil and used skewers to create an impression in the foil.

Collaborator

  • In collaboration with the family specialist, the librarian hosted KLRN, where families come on Fridays to hear about Early Childhood Development and participate in workstations. Students, alongside family members, participate in hands-on activities such as painting and locating items in sensory bins.
  • The librarian collaborated with Instructional Coach Mrs. Vazquez to curate a list of books for the NEEF grant awarded to the Pre-K Academy. These books will be used during our Chef program and incorporate different food cultures, how food grows, and how food originates.
  • Mrs. Jimenez and I collaborated on the plant unit for our Pre-K students during their science time on living organisms. The librarian shared and discussed books about plants with students. Students then planted seeds, watered, and checked on them daily to observe how long it would take for the plant to grow.
  • The librarian attended monthly PLC meetings with district librarians to plan lessons, discussed implementing Edu Protocols in the library, and focused on other ways to enhance the library program.

Collaboration Spotlight

This year West Avenue PreK Academy welcomed three-year-old students to our campus. The librarian was invited to collaborate with the bilingual classroom teachers on a lesson about shapes. The students used various shape molds to create Rice Krispy Treats. They were eager to pour the cereal into the crock pot, stir the mixture, and see the marshmallows melt. After placing the warm mixture on wax paper, the students filled the molds with the Rice Krispy mixture, then practiced their colors while adding sprinkles. Students were so happy to be part of this process. Finally, the students sampled the Rice Krispy Treats and described their shape and taste.

Campus Leader

  • The librarian obtained a grant to take all the Pre-K students to the San Antonio Zoo on Oct. 14. Students were able to observe and create drawings of the animals.
  • The librarian attends weekly leadership meetings to plan upcoming events, help the staff, and look at data from student assessments. These meetings allow us to make informed decisions for the betterment of the school.
  • The librarian presented the Sora app to the staff. They could immediately use this digital resource to facilitate eBooks in their classroom and share them with their students.
  • At a Principal’s Coffee meeting with parents, the librarian spoke about daily read-alouds. She emphasized the tremendous benefits read-alouds provide young children regarding social, emotional, and mental health.
