Ms. Raj Kumaraswamy

Hi! My name is Raj Kumaraswamy (KOO-MAH-RUH-SWAH-MEE) and this will be my second year at Reagan! This is my 19th year of teaching, but only my third year in San Antonio. I moved here with my husband and two small kids (ages 7 and 4) in February 2021 (the weekend of the winter storm– what a welcome!)

I grew up in Orange County, California back when there were still orange trees there. :) I went to the University of California at Berkeley, graduating with a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and then worked for the university for a few years before heading to graduate school at Teachers College Columbia University in NYC. And that is where I began my teaching career– at some of the best public schools in Manhattan and the Bronx.

I am passionate about teaching science and keeping content current and relatable. My goal is to bring this to the classroom each day and hopefully inspire the same sort of passion in my students, or at least make learning interesting and relevant! I have taken advantage of opportunities to further my own knowledge and am always excited to bring these experiences into the classroom. I have visited the Galápagos Islands, done spinal cord research at Columbia University, as well as coral reef research at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies in Australia.

I am VERY excited to be teaching AP Environmental and AP Biology this year and look forward to getting to know you! Can’t wait to meet you!
