Seniors Emmanuel Garcia and Sunny Shen are headed to college thanks to some help from Bill and Melinda Gates.

“If I didn’t get this scholarship, I would have to stay here,” said Garcia. “This helps me go to the college I want to go to. Getting this scholarship gets me on the path.”

Only 750 of the 53,000 Gates Scholarship applications this year were awarded, and two of them are students at Roosevelt High School.

Garcia and Shen are part of North East ISD’s Engineering and Technologies Academy (ETA) magnet school program at Roosevelt. They have earned Summa Cum Laude designations for their incredible GPAs over 100 and are looking forward to continuing their educational journeys in college.

Garcia will attend Holy Cross College at Notre Dame to study philosophy and theology. While he doesn’t plan to continue pursuing a career in engineering, ETA gave him valuable experiences that helped him figure out what he was and wasn’t interested in for college.

Shen has been accepted to the University of Wisconsin Madison but is still waiting to find out if he got accepted to Rice and Carnegie Mellon University. ETA helped him find his passion in Computer Science, which he plans to major in during college.

“There were so many opportunities at ETA,” said Shen. There was so much to do and participate in. These teachers and staff are great mentors, always willing to help you.”

Congratulations, gentlemen. Good luck in the next part of your educational journey.
