    Course objective:

    Technical Theatre is an opportunity for novice students to explore themselves in art and art in themselves.  This course focuses on the beginning stage craft techniques that are the foundation for technical theatre.  The beginning technicians will learn to interpret and execute a theatrical designer's plans, much like a beginning actor learns how to interpret and execute a playwright's script.  Through projects and work on black box and mainstage productions, students gain the confidence and technique needed to become a skilled technician. 

    COURSE CONTENT: 

    1. Introduction to the stage & tool safety: Stage types, Areas of the stage, Curtains and Rigging Introduction. Each student will be introduced, trained and tested on each power tool used in building scenery.
    2. Makeup: Make up supplies and application techniques, special effects make up.
    3. Jobs in the Theatre: The many people it takes to produce a show and the jobs that they do.
    4. Costume Design:  Designing and selecting costumes for production.  Researching costume periods and styles.   
    5. Scene Design Basics: Types of design media, genres of design, analysis of the script. Drafting, creating scene designs for specific scripts, Justifying and explaining design choices, presenting designs.
    6. Lighting: History of stage lighting, lighting safety and types of fixtures, electronic control of stage lighting, Intelligent Lighting Controls, designing for the stage using color, intensity and line.
    7. Properties: Construction of Props and Props management
    8. Sound: Sound system basics.  Sound boards, microphones, and speakers.  Setting up and running sound systems, using wireless lavalier microphones, using portable sound systems, describe how audience perception is considered in sound design.  
    9. Theatre History: The history of theatre and technical theatre. Students will research the past and see how theatre has evolved over the years into what it is today.
    10. Measurements: Learn how to properly read a measuring tape with ¼, ½,  and 1/8 measurements to be able to accurately measure and cut wood.
    11. Building Project(s): Apply measuring skills and shop skill to safety build items in the shop from designing to building to painting.
    12. Publicity: Learning the process of how to promote shows from designing posters to creating tickets and the purpose of a producer.

    COURSE EVALUATION:  Assessments & Projects: Each project will be graded with a rubric that breaks down its components.

    Grading Categories:

    Assessments & Projects:         60%

    Daily Work:                           40%

    Missing Assignments: 

    Missing assignments can be made up at the instructor’s discretion. If an assignment is missing it will be marked as missing in the grade book which results in zero points until the assignment is made up. If the assignment is not turned in, the zero will remain in the grade book. Grades will be posted in a timely fashion. Please allow at least one week after the due date for major assignments to be posted. 

    Academic Dishonesty

    Students are expected to complete all tests and assignments honestly and will not collaborate in dishonest actions.  Students will not give or accept answers or assignments unless directed to by the teacher.  Students caught cheating or plagiarizing will be subject to discipline as stated in the Student Handbook.

    Attendance:  

    You MUST be in class on time. PERIOD.  There are many in-class graded assignments – if you aren’t here – you will not be able to complete them. If you are absent that day – it is your responsibility to check with Mr. Jackson.

    Participation: 

    Because majority of work for this course will be completed in class, students will be expected to always put forth their best effort during class time. 

    SUPPLIES:

    You must always have on hand: 

    1. A PENCIL.  

    2. A JOURNAL for notes and warm-ups. The Journal will stay in the classroom.

    3. WORK CLOTHES:  When we are working on sets you must be dressed appropriately. Keep something at school that you can build or paint in.  NO OPEN TOED SHOES!!!!  Keep long hair pulled back.  I will not listen to you whine that you got primer on your clothes or jewelry or that you got sawdust on your best sweater.  If I do not think you are dressed to work, I won't let you and that means no daily points for that day. Tough!  EXPECT TO GET MESSY EVERYDAY.  

    Classroom Rules and Expectations:

    1. Tardiness – you are tardy if you enter the room any time after the bell rings

    2. Have your supplies ready at the beginning of class.

    3. Horseplay of any kind can result in immediate referrals.

    4. You may bring water to class, no other food or drink.

    5. Be sure your paint clothes are always available for class.

    6. During construction and production of shows ALL SAFETY procedures MUST BE STRICTLY FOLLOWED!

    *REMEMBER: Quick and convenient solutions are usually NOT the safest solutions. * walk in the shop * use tools safely * listen and follow instructions * do not distract others * clean up when work is finished

    EYE PROTECTION! * share tools with others * wear safety glasses while operating power tools.

    7. NO MUSIC LISTENING DEVICES ALLOWED!!! EARPHONES AND CONSTRUCTION DO NOT MIX!

    Technical Theatre II, III, & IV

    Course objective:

    Advanced Technical Theatre is designed for students that have successfully met the requirements in tech theatre I and demonstrate a vested interest in RTC Theatre and show talent in a specific area of theatrical design and production.  This class is responsible for all aspects of design and construction of all theatre sets and other performance needs for the RTC 2023-2024 season.

    RTC 2023-24 Season:

    Each student in the JV and Varsity (Tech II, III, & IV) classes will be required to participate in Run Crew for either the Fall Show or the Musical. The students are only needed for a two-week time span for Run Crew. Run Crew are the techies who make all the behind-the-scenes magic happen on stage. Our Fall Show this year is “Dracula” and our Musical is “Mean Girls.”  Rehearsals will be Monday—Friday with some on Saturday. Rehearsals start right after school and the rehearsals should end between 6:00-6:30 pm. Run Crew does not need to show up until about 2 weeks before the show opens. Fall Show, students are needed from September 28th—October 14th and for the Musical, dates are January 18th—February 3rd.
